Maiko Horisawa grew up in Nagoya and moved to Tokyo to major in voice and opera studies at the Kunitachi College of Music. Upon graduation, she has pursued her further studies of opera in Europe and gospel music in the United States.
In the early days of her career, Maiko has suffered from the vocal fold nodule and lost her voice. After successful surgical removal of the nodules, she has decided to create a new vocal technique in order to avoid relapse and developed an unique vocal and speech method “Tanden Voice”. The method was based on the breathing practice, which was used in Japanese martial arts for many centuries. The Tanden Voice method improves not only the person’s vocal and speech ability, but also the mental state by supporting the proper breathing line and breathing patterns. She has published 5 books about the Tanden Voice method. Having 4 of the 5 books topped the Amazon Japan book chart and sold over 130,000 copies, she has become the best-selling vocal-and-speech author in Japan.
While developing the voice method, Maiko has continued her artist career. Her debut album Soul Aura Vita (2001) has topped the new age charts in the Kansai area and second album Wonderful World (2007) was also well received. In 2007, she has formed a group Angel Stream and released 3 albums; Ave Maria (2008), Re-Birth (2009) and Tabidachi (2010).
Maiko’s unique crystal clear voice has made her a very popular singer in the film and television industry. Her voice has appeared on many films, television series and video games, such as Shanti Days 365 Days, Happy Breath (2014), Eureka Seven (2007) and Zone of the End (2001). She also has performed and vocal arranged for the Japanese translated version of Warner Brothers’films Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) and The Polar Express (2004).
In 2012, she has traveled to Los Angeles to find a producer for her third solo album and met three-time Grammy nominee producer Steve Dorff, who has written many successful songs for the internationally known artists, such as Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston and countless others. Maiko and Steve have collaborated for the 14 songs and recorded the world-class musicians, such as Leland Sklar (b), Vinnie Colaiuta (dr), George Doering (g), Matt Rollings (p) and the Hollywood orchestra.
